You have found a sneaker on e.g. a webshop or on eBay. We will help you with this article. With this tip, you can often see that it is imitation.
Not all imitation shoes have it, but some have though: the shoes are not properly laced. The photo shows an example of a Nike Air Max shoe.
The bug is that there is a hole on beaten by the lacing. Nike Air Max shoes are never released like this. For other Nike sneakers this applies. Although not all holes are always laced, but there never are (several) holes over beaten as in the picture.
Manufacturers of imitation shoes cut down on the lacing. This is done by hand and halves the lacing process, thus labor costs are lower. The cut is of course done to achieve a low-cost production.
Vintage Nike sneakers may well be different laced than is the case today. With vintage we mean models from for the year 2000.

Also we see nowadays imitation Adidas shoes that are not properly laced. Of certain original models are the top (few) holes over beaten.
Nowadays we see almost no original Converse shoes that are wrong laced. Earlier (more than 10 years ago) were sometimes Converse shoes released whereby only the first holes were laced. Please note that there original Converse All Star shoes are often not fully laced (usually be beaten a few holes at the top).
We have the Air Jordan sneakers until now only seen well laced. Also with these sneakers are sometimes the top (few) holes not laced.
Our experience with New Balance is that it is often laced. Some exclusive New Balance shoes we have seen are only laced the first holes.
Timberland is an exception. The lacing way differs every year.
Vans is known for these shoes are often not properly laced. Often only the first holes are laced.
All brands change with the years their production. All brands produced more than 10 years ago the products differently than today. So it may be that you have an original old model which is laced differently than it’s the case today.
As a worker in the factory has not laced correctly, this is a production fault. Production mistakes like this are rare and are also an exceptional case.
